Saturday Siren

Every Saturday (or every other?) at noon on the dot I hear a long, wailing siren coming from somewhere far away. Has anyone else who lives on Capitol Hill heard this? What the heck is it??

It's the jail break siren. They test it every Saturday. If you were ever to hear it at a different time you would know that someone had escaped from the jail down by Congressional Cemetery.

A few years back, a couple of guys got out and they say they set off the siren to warn people, but I was outside with my kids a block away and I didn't hear it. I am just grateful that the guys went the other way toward the subway/busses that are right there. Now the siren is plenty loud.

And before people start on me about Cap Hill safety and living by the jail, I love my neighborhood, my neighbors, my kids' school, and just about everything about living in the city. I can handle not leaving bikes on my porch.
