If you have a lifestyle related illness, do you feel guilty

Anonymous
about the cost of the health care and the systemic burden that comes with those costs?
For instance obesity related diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea?
Also, smoking and its related illnesses like vascular disease or cancer?
I suspect that some people talk themselves out of believing that the illness is lifestyle related, but for the most part, it is obvious.
Friend's father has heart disease that is secondary to sleep apnea that came as a result of obesity. His medical costs in the last 12 months have been over 120K.

This is a societal problem, and you are a bitch.

No. I figure of all the lifestyle vices I could have engaged in (drugs, smoking, promiscuity, shopaholic, etc.), overeating has harmed others the least.

If you are a smug idiot who looks down on the poor because you think they are all lazy welfare queens, do you secretly feel guilty? Even once in a while, like when you haven't watched Fox for a week?

I have carpal tunnel syndrome. It's a bitch; I must wear my hand brace every night otherwise I have pain and pins and needles. I developed this issue from overuse. I'm a Pre-K teacher and use my right hand, according to my doctor, "too much." Yes, I do an excessive amount of paper cutting and handwriting. Do I feel guilty? No.

Do you feel guilty when you break your leg skiing in Aspen?

Do you feel guilty when you troll on DCUM? Do you feel guilty about using words like "systemic burden" incorrectly or at least in the wrong context?

Unless you are actually serious.

Maybe the examples should have been about something other than obesity since some people who might be chubby were offended.

For the most part, it is not obvious, even to medical professionals.

And you sound like a douchebag.

I really don't see how this is a partisan issue or why we are assumong that OP is a Republican. I am a dyed in the wool Democrat whose father drank, smoked (even after a heart attack) and ate like shit for years. He has a multitude of health problems that a boatload, he is on Medicare, and then has the audacity to bitch about the government that has kept him alive. I secretly think he is an ass and an ingrate for slowly killing himself for decades and then biting the hand that feeds him, so to speak. He rails all day about "entitlements" when he is in fact the one who feels entitled.

So all of you trying to make this partisan, get your panties out of a bunch already.

That should read "that cost a boatload."

I eat healthfully, I don't drink, I exercise regularly, yet I'm still overweight. I don't feel like a "systemic burden", nor do I feel guilty.

One big cause of healthcare cost increases is likely related to obesity and it's complications. Respiratory, heart, cancer diseases relayed to obesity cost a lot. Trans fat also can cause trouble even if you are not obese. Smoking and alcohol cost a ton too. Alcohol partly due to the expensive accidents, cancer and liver disease.

If you're overweight, you don't eat healthfully. Period. Regardless, I don't think you are what the OP was referring to.
