Need Help with Compulsive/Emotional Overeating...Have gained 30 lbs in 10 weeks... :-(((

Anonymous
Has anyone had any success in solving their emotional eating problems here? I've struggled with it my whole life, but this latest binge and rapid weight gain is probably one of my worst. I'm just wondering if anyone's had any sustained success in curbing these problems with a local therapist or program. I'm exhausted from all my weight gain and loss yo-yo-ing.

I feel very hopeless.

Do you mind sharing what you are eating to gain that much weight in 10 weeks. That almost seems hard to do.

You need to get to a thearapist right away! Aside from the weight gain, this is horrible for your body. I presume you have kids, so please for them, get to a professional. Heart Disease is no joke.

30 lbs in 10 wks is A LOT. Honestly, I'd see a doctor to rule out any underlying health issues, then work on the emtional aspect after that.

The one and only thing that works for me is disciplining myself to feel what I am feeling. When you head to the fridge, make yourself go to a nonfood area (a front porch rocker is mine) and feel/remember fully. You can write it down. There probably won't be magic revelations instantly, but you will learn to feel acute anxiety and let it pass, and you may get to the root of the issue.

Therapy is helpful, but it's once a week. You need something for in between.

FWIW, I did overcome emotional eating doing only this, and it was faster than I expected. A friend recommended "Women, Food and God" by Geneen Roth and I only read the first couple of chapters. It was a breakthrough.
