Republicans are planning to add language to their official platform supporting a constitutional amendment banning abortion, with no exceptions for rape, incest, to save the life of the mother, etc. As a liberal Democrat, I think this is actually a good thing. With each new and crazier step they are making it more and more clear how they actually feel about women. Adding this plank to their platform will help drive away women who were still voting R, and who might be somewhat anti-choice, but who are offended and appalled by a constitutional amendment that says it's okay to let rape victims suffer or sick pregnant women die, rather than allow a woman to make decisions about her own body. Maybe they can have Todd Akin introduce the new amendment.

lol cnn cited by huffington post says it's going to happen without any source so it has to be true.

This is nothing new, abort away just don't make everyone else pay for it.

Sometimes I forget that education and critical thinking are emphatically not part of the republican platform (hence your lack of reading comprehension). CNN's source is not Huff Post; it's the platform document itself, given to them by a republicans operative. But hey, whatever makes you feel better.

Actually the draft language doesn't mention abortion at all.

Don't be dense. It doesn't have to mention the word "abortion." What it says is:

"Faithful to the 'self-evident' truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed," the draft platform declares. "We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children."

What do YOU think this means?

Life is only NOT sacred when (usually) males decide to end it with murder, the death penalty, their automatic weapons, or callous neglect.

They real problem is those upstart women, thinking they have the right to decide who gets born and who doesn't. Male seed is the ultimate arbiter of life, male power is the ultimate arbiter of death. And don't you forget it.

I am sort of shocked that women on this board who have for the most part, have fairly recently had a baby so have watched those sonograms where the baby is sucking thumb and still think it's okay to kill the little person. This amazes me..I used to believe in abortion but after having a baby..I cannot deny..it is a human being. Could understand the rape argument or other health issues but by and large..women abort because they don't want the baby because it isn't perfect enough or they don't want to deal with having a baby.

Many women on DCUM (or their close friends and family) have had experiences where their lives or health have been at risk due to pregnancy or their beloved fetus would suffer if born. I have three children I love dearly. I would not risk my life for an unborn child and render my children motherless.

Awesome. They just lost themselves the election.

The 2008 platform said
"At its core, abortion is a fundamental assault
on the sanctity of innocent human life."

I'm not sure the language you listed is a giant deviation from that position.

I believe that abortion is the end of a human life. I believe that is true even when the baby is a result of rape.

I don't understand why some people believe abortion is murder except in the case of rape.

But was adding a constitutional amendment actually part of the platform in 2008, or was it just a statement of their beliefs?

Faithful to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence, we assert the inherent dignity and sanctity of all human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity and dignity of innocent human life.

The Republican Party wants to be clear that this platform is not the platform of Mitt Romney.

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/08/21/13395825-priebus-gop-platform-not-the-platform-of-mitt-romney?lite

WTF does that mean? Which goals are we to assume are the ones the party will pursue if they get in office?

I'll tell you what it means. It means they are putting a bunch of crap in their platform to satisfy the wingnuts they are beholden to. But they do not want the document to see the light of day because it is an election killer.
