Except old town Alexandria is actually nice.

Downtown Bethesda has always been boring

Alexandria has cute boutique, local shops. Bethesda is only chains. It’s annoying.

I lived there from 2010-11. I remember going to jaleo for happy hour and enjoying walking around. It seemed more lively than what you’re describing now. I don’t remember other specific stores, but there was a bar we’d frequent

When Barnes and Noble left. That's when it became soulless

Frederick is adorable. My DH and I may retire there from Silver Spring.

I heard some parts of Africa have very few regulations, if that's what you're into. You might need to hire private security, and the infrastructure might be terrible, but at least you'll be in your regulation-free utopia.

You never know in MD, you can be in the best parts of town and still wonder. when you watch the local news, you hear about crimes of passion in VA and MD you hear about senseless crime. take it for what its worth, its the reality. Living in VA is much better.

VA? The land of the gun? And Bumpkin Youngkin?

And in all honestly, what is the problem? Does it affect my everyday life? No. In MD you do have to worry about crime a whole lot. It’s not like that in VA. My wife may shoot me (crime of passion) but not some random guy trying to steal from me! I’ll take my chances with my wife.

Bethesda is just like a mall except not indoors. Rather drive to Tyson’s.

DC restaurant scene is better. Just look at the Best Of lists. So few MoCo restaurants are usually on the list.

Exactly. Crime in Bethesda (not MoCo, but Bethesda itself) is about twice the crime rate of Fairfax County

LOL. Crime in Bethesda is not the problem. That's an unusual perspective. The weird design/traffic is. But the shops and restaurants seem pretty great.

Name one restaurant in downtown Bethesda that isn't dominated by at least 50 other restaurants in the region.
