It's not just about other interests for the land.
Plenty of people are talking up this stupid 9th grade academy idea. They are so terrified of being zoned away from W-L. This county is full selfish assholes. |
That's completely false. The W-L surveys supported boundary changes and also the 9th grade addition. Many W-L neighborhoods will likely end up at Yorktown which has the most rook to grow. The ironic thing is that Yorktown could end up becoming richer and whiter. |
|
My mom went to W-L in the mid 60s when it was over 3,000 students and ranked the number one school in the nation. And it was actually quite diverse as well.
The PTA survey my family filled out explained that W-L could grow to that size again, as one of the options. But to do so would require building an addition. The current 9th grade small communities could be located in the addition. This plan has nothing to do with being selfish. Like at W-L, both Yorktown and Wakefield will undergo interior renovations to increase capacity. And boundary changes are necessary. |
Yes, we will need additions and a fourth high school. Plenty of mommies have been posting their support here and on Facebook for a 9th grade academy at the VHC parcel. That way everybody gets to stay put. It's absolutely about not wanting to change schools. |
| it's all about property values. |
The people living near the VHC parcel better get their heads out of their asses. They are going to Wakefield, and soon. If they are smart they will lobby for a new high school. If they decide to dig in against it, not only will they be zoned Wakefield, but that land will likely be storing buses or some other less desirable use. |
| I guess I can understand the position that if WL is the only real integrated school that is really high performing, it should just be expanded. It won't have enough space, really, but it's not a crazy position. It would be better to build a 4th high school straddling north and south, like WL, but where is the land for that? |
| Umm...there is nothing wrong with Wakefield. It's going to continue to get stronger. |
Seriously The VHC PARCEL! it is like smack dab in the middle. Putting a 9th grade academy there would be a huge wasted opportunity. |
Apart from a new building, there's nothing strong about that school. By virtually every metric it would be in the bottom five in NoVa. |
Where is the VHC parcel, exactly? Is it really close to WL? |
| The VHC parcel is down carlin springs road, I believe. Near carlin springs elementary and I think Campbell. It is not especially close to W-L, other than being in the same county. I assume it would be the HS for roughly the southwest quadrant of the county. Yorktown would be the NW school, W-L the NE and Wakefield the SE. I imagine it would pull off some of the poorest areas from Wakefield and also some |
| 23:30 continued - some of the SFH neighborhoods just north of 50 that currently go to W-L. |
That doesn't mean anything. It's a good school and plenty of middle class parents are choosing it for their kids. Those numbers will only continue to rise as millenials decide to settle in south Arlington. They aren't as skittish about minorities. Unlike Annadale, Lee, and Stuart, Wakefiled's demographics have held steady. We will see it trend more like W-L over the next 15 years. |
I think you're right, Wakefield has everything going for; the atmosphere is pleasant. I live in Rosslyn. If I had a choice and my kid was interested in the IB program we would be going to W&L, but instead we're choosing to go to Wakefield. I visited several times and found the place welcoming. |
