Antisemitic incident at Blair

It’s all optics. “Look how seriously we’re taking this! We called the POLICE!”

Per ACLU:

As a matter of constitutional law, schools must respect the free expression rights of their students

Students have a right to say what they think, even if what they say is offensive to others. See Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Community Sch. Dist., 393 U.S. 503 (1969). For example, students have a right to speak out about their sexual orientation or gender identity, even if their ideas are unpopular or disagreeable.

Similarly, students have a right to speak out about their objections to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. For example, students have the right to voice opposition to civil rights for LGBT people in a classroom discussion as long as it’s relevant to the topic. Regardless of their point of view, however, students do not have a right to express themselves if such expression substantially interferes with the rights of a classmate. Students do not have the right to intimidate or attack other students because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In mcps students cannot speak out against transgendered students. Andy this is pure hate and used to threaten other students. How can you rationalize it is ok?

MCPS has a policy of calling the police for any “hate bias” incident, even if it is purely speech. I think they should stop.

I think they should arrest the kids and suspend or expel them as they should not be allowed to threaten and intimidate others.

Kids do threaten and intimidate others
Happens all the time
Schools used to have police because of the flights, sounds like nobody got hurt this time

This is not written by a poster. It's from the ACLU.

No one is saying any of this is right. In fact I think all of us agree the behavior was completely wrong.

That doesn't mean people shouldn't discuss free speech at schools or Supreme Court precedent.

And, that's why these kids, probably yours, need consequences at school since parents are failing to raise them properly. Of course kids got hurt. You think being that as a Jewish teen is ok and no harm?

You really need to take some time and parent your kids and teach them right from wrong.

This doesn't fall in lines with freedom of speech when it intentionally hurts another. Why is it ok that there are constant attacks on Jews, Muslims and Asians and we are supposed to take it but if it were against other groups, its not ok?

Do you mean like MCPS defining whiteness as a system of oppression?

That's not how the law works. Someone called my child fat the other day, intentionally.

I think MCPS should have a mandatory lesson on hate speech, symbols and why they matter.

Since my child entered MS their classmates have pulled at their eyelids and squinted their eyes saying "Chinese, Japanese--!", waved a hand in front of my child's face and laughed and asked my child how they could see, and called my child "chink" regularly. These incidents have all been reported to teachers who have done nothing.

I think many kids especially those in their early teens, MS and early HS, can be really ignorant about the history of language, gestures and symbols and it would help everyone if they would be exposed to more targeted lessons about this.

Did the school call the police or did a parent of one of the children who reported this?

Are we still talking about the kids that did a salute?
Is this the one off incident or something they did more regularly?
I wish people took showing the middle finger just as seriously.

Thanks to whoever posted this hate bias reporting document: https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/district/compliance/fy23_quick-reference-hate-bias-procedures.march-2023.pdf

What qualifies as a hate-bias incident? How is it defined? Does repeatedly calling someone chink and making fun of children's facial features not qualify?
