Call to discuss the state of Hardy 05/15/23

Given how rampant and persistent these problems were, it seems reasonable to assume some of the blame lies with the school leadership, and not just the teachers.

Nothing ever got better.

You realize schools can't do that. Other Hardy parents literally threatened to sue me for confiscating kids phones.

that’s news to my DCPS middle school, which has a policy requiring kids to hand in phones in the morning.

Guess what? Parents can and do still refuse

ok so? sounds like you need better admins to back you up.

Why? I and my admin don't need to waste my time on the squeakiest wheels? You're just trying to change the subject bc you are wrong

reading comprehension fail

The comeback of the weak. But you are welcome to explain why I and my admin should waste our time

Do you or do you not find phones disruptive? If you do and just can’t be bothered to confiscate phones (per existing school policy!) then that reinforces that yes, Hardy needs better administrators.

This is yet again a reason why parents should not have control over this. Why would I waste ruining a relationship with an otherwise strong child bc their mother is over the top worried about their phone being on their person. Admin also understands the importance of relationships and realizes we can't win everything by citing "policy"

Protip - when there is a school-wide policy consistently applied to all kids you don’t have to worry about “ruining a relationship.” But it takes actual administrative control to do that.

So you don’t believe in school-wide rules? Just hopeless to set and enforce them? Ok well, I’m starting to get the picture of what went wrong.

I don't sweat the small stuff and my kids succeed. I'm not trying to win the cellphone war when there's parents all over the dmv who treat them as life or death. Keep trying to excuse your poor behavior in witch hunting someone out of a school with 5 weeks left

You had teachers, often sped teachers, yelling at students.

You had teachers using punitive punishments placed upon entire classes for the misbehavior of a few.

You had teachers encouraging their advisory students to rub it in the faces of other advisories who didn’t win the challenges.

You had administrators watching movies on their laptop while serving as substitute teachers. (Not movies with the class. Watching their own movie while students were supposed to do something else.)

I honestly don’t believe fellow teachers don’t know any of this.

Oh the terror.

Yup, this. Accountability remains the boogeyman.

It’s the 21st century, in a developed nation, in a school district in which earlier teachers posted bragging about their salaries. And you settle for this is okay. Jesus Christ, hold yourself to higher standards.

I'm comfortable with the standards I hold myself to as a professional. If you'd like the next principal to start frisking your 12-15 year old children to check for phones and weapons it does seem like you all have the power to make that happen

DCPS realized they were sitting on a ticking time bomb and decided to act. They knew the stories were true; the records checked out.

And if your child was spared, like mine, you still had to deal with lagging academics and grotesquely uneven teaching quality.

There was scarcely a single thing working in that school this year.

Wow. If the above is true then he should be let go.

No kids at Hardy, just a parent following this thread. I don’t get why some Hardy teachers on here are upset he is leaving if the above is true. It really speaks poorly of you ain’t addition to your responses on this thread.

1) we have no idea if what this anonymous person is accusing the principal of is true
2) if it somehow is true, then the poster is claiming that the information was hidden. Not really sure how you can blame the teachers for not mind reading

Listen to yourself. You ruined a man’s career and wouldn’t let him finish the last 21 days of school because “he watched a movie on his computer while covering a class” and “a teacher (not him) yelled at a student”. PJ definitely needed some serious improvements but he didn’t deserve this.

DRAMA! Oh no - one advisory class teased another one because they didn’t win the ice cream challenge??!!! OFF WITH HIS HEAD I SAY!

Hardy teachers on here, were you ok with the hiring of a 3rd assistant principal when 10 teachers are leaving and PJ didn't build a budget that allowed for the number of teachers that would allow students to have elective choices and classrooms with a reasonable number of students?
