Mothers, Palin & Choice

Any woman thinking that RoeVWade is not relevant to her should read this article. It amazes me that this topic is still taboo enough that it has never come out on DCUM.

And here's another good piece.

Thanks for posting this. I think we need to be reminded that we are talking about real individual people when we talk about choice and pregnancy.

I actually had a friend to whom something like this happened. She and her husband were pregnant with their second and discovered during her first sonogram that the baby's brain had not developed. She was about 20 weeks along and they ended up doing a D&X. She and her husband were DEVASTATED. It was horrible. It does happen to real people, and no, it was not a lightly thought-out decision to do the D&X.

Actually, reading those graphic accounts would send me running to the pro-life camp (and no, I wasn't there already).

did you just overlook the fact that these babies were destined to die either way? And if YOU thought it was graphic, imagine having to go THROUGH this as a real situation. These parents experienced the most crucial pain a person can have. I don't know how I would have coped if I had been pregnanct for 20 weeks with a baby that wasn;t going to live or go through severe pain the very few minutes it would live.

To the 10:53 poster - please keep in mind that nobody can force you to go through an abortion. That is the point of being pro-choice. What is so difficult to deal with as a pro-choicer is the idea that somebody could force me to go through with a doomed pregnancy regardless of my circumstances.

I agree that the graphic accounts are disturbing. As I mentioned in my previous post, for my friend who went through it - it was horrible. All of it. It seems to me that being in a situation where the reality of the baby's projected existence is equally bad and not having the choice would be just as bad. Just food for thought.

I too have a friend who recently went through a D&E due to genetic abnormalities that made eventual fetal death certain. Because providers who are able to do this procedure are so few and far between - yes, even in DC - she and her husband had to wait more than a week for an appointment (another week of continuing fetal nervous system development...). And she was specifically told NOT to go to Georgetown ER if there were any complications because the doctors there would have no idea what to do, since they receive no training for emergencies related to late term miscarriages or pregnancy terminations.
