Moving DC into College Dorm--Any tips appreciated!

Anonymous
DC will be moving into the college dorm soon.
Any tips or advice appreciated!
My own college experience was quite some time ago (25+ years) so it has been awhile!
Thanks in advance.

Buy underbed storage drawers - my daughter packed her items in the drawers so she was ready to go at move in.

The best piece of advice I received was to pack in reusable grocery store bags and oversized ziploc bags. This made moving in easy - nothing was too heavy. Bring the bags home. Though luggage was packed, they were packed with lighter items - winter coats, sweaters, etc. Bring a large trash bag to store luggage under bed - to fight off dust.

Have all bedding washed and ready to go. Making up the bed first will make DC feel settled. Be sure DC sets up laptop and internet connection while you are there.

Be positive and let your DC make all the decisions once you enter the room!!

Don't bring too much stuff, you can always get more later
3M hooks are great for hanging just about anything
Shower caddy and shoes are must haves
Bring some tape. It's useful.
If she wants under bed storage, consider bed risers
Make sure you have enough hangers
DD has a trunk from camp that she uses at school. It fits under the bed, holds a lot of stuff and you can sit on it.
Think about some sort of over the door/stacking shoe thing if your kid has a lot of shoes
Label towels and sheets because a lot of them look the same
Figure out the laundry situation (quarters or whatever) before you leave

Both DC go to boarding school so I've done this a lot and they're not even in college!

Moved DD back in yesterday.

Be prepared for a Target trip on move in day. So much of what you need can be room dependent. My DCs college has adjustable beds so no bed risers needed. Tons of underbed space requiring all sorts of boxes and bins. Get wheeled underbed boxes if you can. The over door hooks didn't work in DDs rooms because the doors were too tall (they couldn't reach the hooks). This may sound excessive but we did monogrammed towels and sheets. No mistaking those. We get a cheap rug (like $20) each year and toss at the end of the year because it's disgusting.

We take Clorox wipes to wipe out drawers and surfaces. Don't forget a trash can, laundry basket, etc.

Oh, get a foam/egg crate mattress pad. In twin XL.

You haven’t already thought about this? DD and I spent months planning her freshman dorm room with her roommate & mother. Here is a picture to give you an idea http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BowoYKVf9WQ/UC5aKU-8NVI/AAAAAAAACXw/KjwcraCSqHM/s1600/309274_3595401645660_774145333_n.jpg

Wow. That is lovely but I have to admit my DDs dorm room looks NOTHING like that. She has lovely bedding from Serena & Lily but the masses of plastic bins are clearly visible under the bed and stuff is stashed everywhere.

Wtf is that. No college student lives live that or even wants that.

Prepare for a Target or Walmart run. We did not try to take everything with us. We let the room dictate what we got.

Surge protected power strips. We underestimated the need for these. Between gadgets, fridge, laptop, etc., you will not have enough outlets for two people.

Let DC take the lead in unpacking and setting the room up. As parents, we want to make sure everything is just right. But the best thing we did was let them be the boss.

No long drawn out good byes. Once the room is set up and all the parental stuff is done, make the farewell short and sweet.

LOL!! Very nice! But knowing my DD's, this would last a day (if that long). Its a living space, not a Better Homes and Garden spread. LOL!!

My kid's dorm room was very dusty, and so before moving in - since he has asthma - we made sure to clean it. My niece moved into a room full of mold (had escaped the notice of the facilities people). To me, the first thing is to be sure the room is clean - not to the extent of neurosis, of course.

We found out only at move-out last year that the summer storage was very limited for my DS. So he had to basically dump some stuff, like a fan. (We don't live near enough to easily go fetch him.) So knowing what they can store, vs. bring home, vs. throw out might help decide how much you buy on that (inevitable?) Target or Wal-Mart run.

I think each girl should be able to select her OWN bedding etc. It is their personal space not twin beds in a 1 person room. Colleges allow shipping prior to move in so we:
1. ship bedding for free-2 pillows, sensorpedic pad [foam and fiber mixed in cotton cover so NO smell], 3 bath towels, hand towel, wash cloth, mattress pad, comforter, sheets
2. amazon student has free shipping as do many stores when you buy over 50 or 99 dollars
3. ship for free: shampoo, laundry detergent, other toilet articles, dorm fridge, basic lights, rug, tv, etc

If college is a long drive you might have to scrap the prior year's bedding and towels since it most likely would have been in storage dirty for months.

That room in the photo looks like a hotel or an adult guest room.

I would love to see a picture of that room in a month.
