In case you wonder about the "media elite" . . . .

they really don't like Palin. Jonah Green of New York Magazine and Sam Henig of Newsweek and Slate are throwing a Sarah Palin look-alike contest/party at a bar in Manhattan today. The contest will be judged by Max Short of GQ. Here's a link to the flyer they sent out, complete with Palin's head photoshopped onto a bikini-clad body.

From their email:

What an inspiration. If not as a leader, then at least as a fashion icon. The hair! The glasses! The cute gun accessorizing!

In honor of McCain’s vice presidential pick, join us this Saturday for “Palin Comparison,” a Sarah Palin look-alike contest. Be creative: if you don’t have thick brown hair and Tina Fey glasses to work with, perhaps you have a freshly slaughtered moose, or a special needs baby. And what’s a hockey mom (aka pitbull with lipstick) without a few hockey players?

It's hard to argue that the "media elite" aren't a wee bit biased when Newsweek, Slate, New York Magazine and GQ staff are hosting a party for the purpose of mocking Palin. Of course it's funny if you live in NYC or DC or a similar place. But New York City and DC won't exactly decide the outcome of this election.

You had me until you started complaining about NYC and DC as if anyone living there would find this funny and no one else in the country will.

In my view, it's sexist and in poor taste. Oh, my, and I live in DC! (What am I doing here given that I have such enlightened views?!)

But I know that there are plenty of male chauvinist pigs all around this great country of ours. Sigh.....

OP here. I didn't mean that I find it funny. I too find it sexist and in poor taste. I just meant that things that play well in big cities don't necessarily in other places.

Alas, I imagine we will be in the minority who don't find it funny. And we will be accused of lacking a sense of humor, too.

PP here. I am smiling wryly because how well I remember being accused of having no sense of humor in the early days of the feminist movement!

Don't worry. I know you didn't think it was funny. But I will disagree with you on the big city vs.....non-big city (I guess). This is the kind of sexist humor that will play well in rural areas and small towns, too. I grew up in a small town and I don't think it has changed that much!

OP here. You're probably right. Sigh. . . .
