Radford is about 4-4 1/2 hours depending on traffic. The school is a lot different from most of the other VA state universities. It feels like a small southern school. The students, faculty, and especially staff, are super friendly. The campus is beautiful. Most of the kids who go there are from other parts of Virginia, but NoVA is represented. In a strange way, this might be a good thing. Some schools like VCU have packs of kids from each NOVA high school and they form cliques. That is less a problem at Radford.
Academically, the school is perceived to be lower ranking than most of the other Virginia schools, especially in NoVA. There are students there, however, from Southside VA who had Radford as their first choice. It has a new President who seems to be making big improvements. For example, Radford is opening a brand-new state-of-the-art business school building this fall.
The school also has a reputation as a "party school." especially during Quadfest in the spring. But the biggest partiers are from other VA schools who show up. All in all, Radford is a decent, affordable school where you can get a food education. Oh, and the alumni network is surpisingly strong.
