Washington Latin no longer a charter school?

Anonymous
Is Washington Latin becoming a private school rather than a charter school? I just checked http://www.washingtonlatin.org/html/home.html. This is very discouraging news for us, if I'm understanding correctly!

It is still a charter school. It's website has changed to LatinPCS.org.

PP here-- I meant that "its" website has changed, not "it's"--LOL.

OP here. Thanks for helping me clarify. After my first panicked response, further Googling revealed that an independent school with a similar name and concept is organizing for opening next year. The school with fees is clearly out of reach for us, but it's good to hear that the charter remains an option. So my high achiever won't necessarily be penalized for her middle-income origins!

Anyone able to fill in more details about (what looks to me like) the schism?

The original headmaster was a bit of a loose cannon. There were issues with the board and the whole school seemed destined to implode. I have kids that age, and many of their schoolmates who left for latin in the first couple of years, came back midyear to DCPS because they were so disappointed. The headmaster left, and took the name Washington Latin with him (and the website washingtonlatin.org). If you look at it he speaks about starched napkins etc. The Washington latin that is running now is actually called washington Latin Public Charter School. The original headmaster is no longer involved.

This is informative. 11:55, do you know where the teachers are? Are they w. former headmaster, WLPCS, or some of each?

(personal bias here is that teachers make a school). thx!

I'm not 11:55, but can answer this. Some teachers left in protest during the struggle with the former headmaster at Latin PCS last year. Many stuck it out, however, and are still with the school this year (which is a good thing). The teachers that left are unlikely to follow him to the private Latin school, I would think.

The new headmistress at the charter Latin school comes from NCS. Things are looking much better!
