MUNDO VERDE/Creative Minds: Drop off and Pick up - How did CapCity Do it? Starting to worry....

Anonymous
DS has PS space at Mundo Verde, so we will be a new MV family. With two weeks away from the first day of school, I am starting to worry about the drop off and pick up situation at MV. With Creative Minds next door starting for the first time this year, and with MV in the new location right next door to Creative Minds, I'm just wondering if anything is being coordinated for the pick up and drop off periods. What did CapCity (I believe they are the school that was at the location last school year) do last year(s)? I haven't heard anything from MV except to look for parking spaces in the neighborhood. What is everyone planning to do come the first day of school? Have either of the schools applied for loading and unloading zones in front of the building(s)? I don't live in that neighborhood, but I have been coming by to look around the neighborhood. We have a plan in mind, but just wondering what other families will do..... Thanks!

I don't have any thing helpful to say, but I feel your pain. We turned down for this very reason, which seems like it would be a major factor of stress for families who drive.

Cap City had high schoolers in that space. Totally different scenario.

No loading and unloading zone during rush hour on 16th street!! Keep in mind that the traffic tends to get worse once all privates and publics are in session and summer holidays are over. Not sure if MV shares a DCPS start date, but you'll get a real sense after Labor Day.

from MV's Q&A for families:
Is there anywhere to park since I will need to drive my student to school each day?
Yes. There is metered and residential parking available on surrounding streets, including Park Road, Lamont Street, Mt. Pleasant Street, Monroe Street, Sacred Heart Way, and Hiatt Place, among others. We recognize that parking may be difficult as our school is located in an urban area. If parking proves to be exceedingly difficult for families, we will explore drop-off and pick-up options to alleviate the time involved with having to park and walk children to their classrooms. We also encourage families to walk, take public transportation, and carpool.

i don't know that that helps you much, but it's what is currently on their site. we were at MV last year when everyone worried, too, about parking near the dupont location. we drove very infrequently, but when we did, we were able to find parking on side streets without any problem.

Creative Minds is setting up a drop off on Park Street -- where a parent can let his or her child exit the car on the left into the hands of CM employee who will escort him/her into the building. I have some concern that this will result in a crazy traffic backload on Park Street and on both sides of 16th Street as parents prepare to make the right or the left onto Park to drop off their kids.

I also don't know that the planned drop off will be an option for me, as I have a 3 year old and would like the opportunity to walk her in. I'm commuting from NE (before continuing to work), so public transportation isn't a valid option.

That drop off solution could be disastrous. Hopefully MPD has or is involved to deal with the back up and irate commuters. What time is this drop off planned for?

Does anyone know if there are bike racks at the new location?

Old CCPCS family -
We planned on parking 3 blocks away and walked. We were at the lower school (15th and Irving). Yes my child hated that I did not just park on Irving in front of the school - but there is no parking there for a reason - and I did not think it was safe.

I routinely parked on Irving Place or Mt. Pleasant. I was usually able to find a spot on Hiatt Place. Worse case, I paid to park at the shopping center and walked.

Recommedation: Get coins and be ready to pay for parking - it is cheaper than a parking ticket and Parking Enforcement is out when school returns to remind families of parking regulations.

Mt Pleasant street is fairly empty in the mornings. Plan to park there, and walk down Lamont to 16th, then to MV.

MV, as a sustainable school, would like as many parents are possible to take public transportation or walk to school. We work in VA and must drive. Last year, in a busy and crowded neighborhood, we never had problems parking because we planned to park where there were spots - a block away from the school.

If you want to park very close to the school, you will be sorely disappointed and annoyed. Build time in for a brief walk and save yourself a ton of worry and stress.

If anything, I hope they have a crossing guard. I do not know if one was at that intersection last year and it will be needed with all of the children.

Here is the information on how to request a crossing guard:

This is what happens when neighborhood schools are terrible and/or get closed.

Even if my neighborhood school was great, I would still choose MV, parking issues or not!

I guess its the mundo part of the school you like, because shuttling kids around the city for ES isn't very verde.
