Looking for a kid friendly neighborhood in the district

Anonymous
Hi, we have been on a long hunt for a decently sized house in a family friendly neighborhood in the district (we are in a charter school we love so need to stay in D.C) Seems like we have been priced out of the Hill (including Hill East). Heard good things about Shepard Park from a friend but I don't know anything about the neighborhood and worry because it is so far out. Any thoughts?

Shepard park is not actually farther out than "hill east / rfk" in terms of commerce-library-movie theaters. Silver Spring is at your fingertips there.

People are going to jump in and tell you Shepard Park is not urban. While it's not congested and vibrant on the sidewalks, I would point out that it does indeed have a non-tension-filled mix of black and white homeowners, and has for a long time.

Shepherd Park is nice! Not very walkable to commerce but close to it. The elementary school is very nice too.

I know a lot of young families looking at Brookland... but what grade does your charter go through?

Will you be stressing over MS and HS?

If this is a possibility - look for something IB for Wilson so at least you feel you have a good fall back.

crime has been bad in shepard park recently (as in a few months ago). In addition to more car break ins, there have been a number of carjackings and armed muggings before its totally dark. Its possible it has improved but check crime stats first.

If Shepherd Park is out due to crime, pretty much all of NE and SE is out due to crime, too.

The area also feeds to Deal, and if your kid goes to Deal, you get to go to Wilson. So you've at least got OK to good fallback options in the public schools.
