Child Psychologist - NW (but not too far NW!) DC

Anonymous
Can anyone recommend a child psychologist in DC for a two-year-old with aggression issues? Dupont area preferred. I've seen other postings on DCUM for people in Chevy Chase/Silver Spring, but that's a bit far. Thanks! (PS, please don't reply if all you have to say is "why do you want a psychologist?" or some variant. On the other hand, serious replies will be very appreciated.)

I know Lenny from the dogpark and don't have experience with him clinically but he's a great guy and I'd seek his help if we were in need:

Ok, so here's where I get snarky. Folks around here travel across rivers and boundaries for the "best" school and you don't want to look a few miles for a terrific child psychologist? Doesn't compute for me.

Many are located on upper ct ave and beth/cc--geez, it's your kid, deal with it.

Why not contact the best you can find and then ask for a closer referral? The good ones are pretty jammed up anyway. By reputation, top notch include Judy Chused and Rachel Ritvo, but we're blessed with a number of terrific therapists in greater dc.

+1

You really think Chevy Chase is too far from Dupont? Seriously? I could understand not wanting to schlep to Gaithersburg or Reston, but you're really limiting your options.

We have seen Dr. Kaufman as a family and he also worked with one of my young kids. He is a great guy and he was very helpful to us. He is in Woodley Park across from the zoo. We had tried someone else who was ineffective, I'd recommend Dr. Kaufman highly.

Didn't even know he had a dog, lol.

We have worked with Dr. Kaufman - he was helpful to us as a family and my kids liked him. He is very calm and taught us all relaxation techniques, my anxious child uses them all the time in all sorts of situations. I recommend him highly.

If you do decide to venture up north, we love Dr. Georgia De Gangi in Kensington (301) 962-0800 for similar issues. In Tenleytown, try Alison Fellowes Comly (202) 841-3697.

I'm looking for a psychologist as well, for a 7 year old dealing with frustration/anger management issues. Not sure if that's what you mean by "aggression," but if so, I've found the book "The Explosive Child" to have some very good discussion of what may be going on in these kids heads, and techniques for diffusing anger.

Good luck!

Dr De Gangi runs a long waiting list, unfortunately (at least last time we called).

You are really limiting yourself with staying in the Dupont area. Yuo need someone who specializes in and sees only children. They don't take insurance (almost never) and the good ones book up fast. Find the best one who is actually taking new patients who you can get to in a reasonable amount of time.

I'm going to weigh in against Georgia DeGangi. I found her to be very impatient and disapproving of my ADHD preschooler, who was very sweet -- not oppositional at all -- but very impulsive. For example, my kid saw that DeGangi had a water feature on her wall, and climbed up on DeGangi's chair to touch it. DeGangi was SHOCKED and angrily told my child to GET DOWN. My child was 4, in a small room, and I had turned around for A SECOND to address Dr. DeGangi. Her disrespect for my child was apparent and upsetting.

I know Lenny from college and agree that he is a great guy. I know he's working with a lot of children these days and that's really where he excels.

Silvana Kaufman is exceptional. She's in Tenleytown and she does therapy in English and in Spanish.

Has anyone heard of Dr. Mindy Shankman? I have been trying to get an appointment with a child psychiatrist for my 1o year old son and it is practically impossible. She has an opening but no one has heard of her. She was in Silver Spring and is now in Kensington.

Please recommend a good child psychologist in dc me area for my 4.5 year old daughter. Her biological father (my ex husband) is pressuring her from having a loving relations with her step father.
