Book forum: pretty pretty please?

Anonymous
There have been so many great book threads and they always get lots of interest and responses. I've read so many books based on recommendations from DCUM. However, I always find it difficult to go back and find threads. If you just search "book recommendations" you get inundated with threads about finding a good sleep training book or about Magic 123 or whatever. I've searched for the threads I already know exist (best novel, page tuner) but I would love a forum just for books. It would be great for getting book recommendations, of course. But it would also be great for "book club" type threads to discuss books.

I can't be the only one, right?

You and I are on the same wavelength. Maria probably is as well. However, the last time this idea was suggested there wasn't much support for it. Even one of our premier book thread posters wasn't in favor of it. Take a look at this thread to see what I mean:

From what I recollect (maybe I missed a thread but I do read DCUM very faithfully) the DCUM book club just did not work. There was one thread about the novel "Room" with a tepid discussion that just didn't take off beyond the surface of the book and it died out after no more than 2-3 pages of posts. That was it. No more DCUM book club. The other thing is (again just my opinion) when you put these posts in their own separate forums you miss the drive-by traffic of people just popping in and posting because they are in Off-topic.

Oh snap! A poor man's Google? That was harsh.

I totally get the criticism of spreading the site too thin, but I think a book forum would be different. One of the biggest drawbacks to starting a new forum is the fear that posting there would not get as much traffic or as quick a response as it would in off topic. But I think that doesn't apply to books. There is no need to post "loved the hunger games, what should I read next?" or "did anyone else not see the twist in we need to talk about Kevin coming?" in off topic.

My biggest argument is still the search issue. It would be great to have a separate forum if for no other reason than archival purposes. I finish one book from a thread and then a week or two later have to rack my brain to find that same thread or an older one I know had some good suggestions.

I'd love a book forum. I was excited about the dcum book discussions but they got lost in off topic. It's hard to find bookish people these days, and when I run across them here I love it. Please do consider it.

Why don't you guys prove you want a book forum? Start a thread in off-topic to pick a book. Then, once selected, start a thread with a date certain for discussion. For example: "Book Club: Eat, Pray, Love: Discussion 8/31" Then go back to the thread on 8/31 to discuss.

I'm not all that into the concept myself, but for those of you who are, you can make do with the existing forums until there's some momentum going. That will show Jeff and Maria that the interest is real.
