Why do you twit or follow somebody?

Do you feel a little overwhelmed with all the emails, texts, IMs and twits?

Sorry, tweet

Haha. Twitting. I love it.

I do not Twit, personally, for the very reason you state. I have enough to keep up with between personal email, work email, facebook, linkedin.

I tweet and don't have any other form of social media so do not find it overwhelming. It's great for following news, weather, etc as it happens. When we had the earthquake last summer the very first thing I did was look at twitter to find out what the hell was going on. Without twitter I wouldn't have known about the Derecho in advance, etc.

I use it to find free Kindle books. Also when I lived in California, I followed interesting people who would alert me to local events or restaurants that were off the beaten path or other hidden gems.

I've been trying to find the same type of Tweeps in DC, but everyone here just complains about their commute.

I like other PP's use it for news, weather, and sport news mostly. I follow some funny celebs too, like Conan O Brien and Will Farrell who are entertaining to me. NFL is another big one. I think I have actually tweeted once.

I am interested in hearing from folks on this.

I honestly can't think of anyone oranything I love that much that I need to be attached minute by minute to it. My college cousin tried to explain her need to tweet to me and I must say, if I followed her I would have to kill her! I much prefer blogs or Facebook. People can post it and I will look at it when and if I want to. That goes for myself too.

I have an iphone and laptop at my disposal all the time so I can check weather and news at my convenience. I feel like getting tweets would be like an info barrage all the time.

You realize you can check twitter at your convenience too. You can even skip some of them.

I have an account that I use to follow a few interesting/funny people (honest toddler, catalog living, Conan obrien) or news related feeds (capital weather, city emergency alerts). Very useful and not at all a time suck.

Yep, great during weather emergencies, following social crises (Japanese nuclear accident), politics (humorous commentary on the latest campaign scandal) or sports. I use Tweetdeck to set up different "lists" on different topics - then you can have at hand the tweets you're most interested in. I rarely send any tweets out but I love to read them.

I have zero desire to tweet myself, but have grown to find it hugely useful (Capital Weather Gang, DDOT for traffic, MPDC for crime, various news sites). My commute on public transport is too short for any longform reading, so checking headlines on my phone via Twitter is perfect.

I originally joined facebook for the news feeds as well as updates from things like my kids' schools. But I much prefer Twitter for that now. Faster, more concise, all in one place. I don't retweet much. I've never tweeted something original.

You can follow Kim Kardashian and Justin Beaver for fluff. Or you can follow NASA and your favorite journalists for real knowledge.

Your choice.

I love twitter - I find it more fun than facebook. There's so much hyper local news on there, and lots of the DC agencies are there and very responsive.

I tweet for my business, occasionally. I loathe it. But it's helpful, and builds credibility to have prominent industry-specific followers, as well as interactions with industry-specific twitter accounts.
