Social Skills Group for 5 year old

Anonymous
Hi All,

My daughter is starting a social skills group this week. For those with some experience, what did you tell your child that she was going to the group for? I just want to prepare her without making her worry more than she already does!

Thank you!

I told my son that he was going to camp (it was a social skills camp) and meet new friends with whom he was going to play. Then he said that he didn't want to meet new friends. But then I said that he was going to play with legos and build a lot of structures. This made him interested. Good thing that he did indeed work with legos during camp.

When my DS asks why he has to go to OT/speech/etc I point out that all the other kids in the waiting room are there bc they need extra help, too. My DS is a bit older than your DD, but he feels isolated sometimes, and it helps for him to see that everyone has something they struggle with. Just something to think about as she gets older!
