? for those who make their own yogurt

Anonymous
I made Greek yogurt in the crock pot a week ago, and it came out so well that I decided to do it again. After pouring the milk into the crock pot, I realized that I had bought lactose free ultra-pasteurized. Should I just call it a loss and dump it out, or does it have any chance of working?

I don't think it will work without lactose.

Yes! It works as well as regular milk. The lactose has been broken down into other sugars, but the bacteria cultures like them as much as lactose.

(OP again)- thanks for the input! I'm going to keep going with it, since I really have nothing to lose. Will update on how it turns out!

Let us know what happens. And thanks for the recipe - I'm going to try this!

OP here- it's straining in the fridge now. So far it doesn't seem as thick as the last time, but it may still be edible. I'll see in a few hours (or after work).

OP update- it didn't come out as thick as my first batch (with lactose and NOT ultra-pasteurized milk), but I'm definitely still eating it.
