I hope MCPS does not put art magnet and spanish immersion in Woodward. If FARMS rate is already going to be 40% then putting these programs will result in small population for kids interested in STEM. Then you will start facing issue with lack of high level math coursesin Woodward.

Isn’t this going to be the idea behind the new regional model they are going to be rolling out, schools with specialties in the broader region? I do feel like we only know half the story until we see how that maps out.

All ideas can be and should be explored, but if you have a situation where very few kids are interested in taking higher level math courses then you are not going have that option in HS. Put a art program in places like Whitman, Churchill etc. It does not have high FARMS it won't impact too much to not leave enough kids for higher level math. ONe of the problem in many DCC schools are not offering higher level math due to not enoujgh students being intertested in it. You don't want Woodward to face simiar situation.

Kids are interested but discouraged from doing anything more than ab. We had to really push to get our kids into bc.

That's sad. Kids should be encouraged. Math is a fantastic subject and opens so many doors.

How do we successfully get it implemented

Agree with the VM/GP switch. What would be the suggestion for balancing out DCC schools?

I missed something. What’s the “1 school”? I thought there was overcrowding at Blair and Wheaton.

There is overcrowding at most of the schools.

So just leave it since it is all the same?

Option 4 seems to really only involve overcrowding at Wheaton which is solved by the VM/GP switch

Only Wheaton. Send some of the over crowded Wheaton to the other DCC schools. You mitigate long bus ride issue too.

Only Wheaton under option 4 is over crowded and WJ is very under utilized.

So you send Viers Mill to WJ instead of woodward. That helps Wheaton too.

You send the part of Garrett Park who isn't zone to Woodward to woodward to keep those kids together (and it is at higher capacity than WJ).

If Wheaton still has over crowding after the Viers Mill move, you balance out a little more at DCC schools but it may be solved without that

Oh, I see…. We’re trying to avoid making Woodward like the DCC.

How would this work when the other schools are over capacity and already lots of portables.

But they’re not under option 4. Except Wheaton which is solved for by them solution RM parent proposed upthread.

Oops should have read more closely. You were responding to poster who suggested sending Wheaton to other DCC schools instead of WJ. Got it (and agree!)

Option 4 :

Only over crowded school is Wheaton with 120% capacity and WJ has 77% in this option.

Taking entire Viers Mill to WJ will keep it under 100% for Wheaton and WJ both.

Moving entire Garrett Park to Woodward will fill Woodward.

This step will balance FARMS in Woodward and WJ.

This does not create problem for anyone and bus ride from Viers Mill to WJ is only minutes away comapred to Viers Mill to Woodward.

I am not sure why MCPS did not propose this option from the start itself. It's solves pretty much everything including over crowding in all HS and does not create another Whitman in our county.

I will link to this again at this point in the thread. Here is the board policy on what factors will be taken into account in all boundary studies: https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/FAA.pdf

Property values have never and will never be a part of it.

These 4 proposed options appear to each focus on one of the factors: student demographics, geography, facility utilization, and stability over time. The final option is much more likely to be a mix of these.
