Is Bald Head Island a doable destination from NOVA in September over a long weekend? Driving.

I know it is beautiful, but I have never been there. Also - how it is with kids? Do you have to leave the island for fun?

It is a very long drive for just a long weekend (esp with kids). It is fantastic there. We go every year and rent a house for 1-2 weeks. Once you are on the island you do not want / need to leave (ever!). Our kids love it.

Heard about alligators. Also, heard food is very expensive. Is this true?

I've been there. It is a long drive for the weekend, plus you have to factor in the time to get over to the island. Food was not as crazy as I had expected. It was fine. We took all of our food, but realized that that was not necessary. We would have been fine just buying it on the island. My kids LOVE it there. I just think it's ok.

I think the people are snooty. There are nicer, more upscale islands where the people are more friendly.

There are alligators on every island down there. They are not a big deal. Last year, my kids were throwing rocks at them. Great - Not too bright!
