A big county school system is very different from where i grew up where it was all town based.

When I plug our address into the boundary locator it give me the schools my child would go to. However on the elementary school page it lists the HS pyramid the school is under but this is not the same as the HS in the boundary locator. Is this normal?

It's a split feeder and/or a boundary change for next school year. And yes, it is "normal" in FCPS.

"Clusters" and "pyramids" in Fairfax are set up largely for administrative reasons. They don't necessarily tell you where your kid will attend school, since there are some elementary schools that split to two middle schools, and some middle schools that split to two or even three high schools (Carson MS sends kids to Oakton, South Lakes and Westfield HS). You always need to check the "boundary locator" to find out the specific school assignments.

To take a few examples, Wolftrap ES is assigned to the Madison HS "pyramid," but about 1/2 of its students go on to Marshall HS instead; Franklin Sherman ES assigned to the McLean HS "pyramid," but about 1/2 of its students go on to Langley HS instead; and Kilmer MS is assigned to the Marshall HS "pyramid," but about 1/3 of its students go on to Madison HS instead. In addition, a student can end up attending a HS that is in a different "cluster" than the MS that the student attended. But the "pyramid" and "cluster" assignments still matter for various administrative purposes within FCPS.
