Lunch with kids on Capitol Hill?

Anonymous
Friends are visiting out of town and are staying in Capitol Hill. They can't come up to our place so we need to meet them near the hotel.

We'll be 4 adults and 6 children. Where can meet for lunch?

Thank you!

My kids love going to Matchbox on 8th St. SE There are many restaraunts on 8th St. so you could just take a stroll and pick one.

where on Capitol Hill? I'm assuming table service, not fast food.

Senate side has a few restaurants on Mass Ave and in Union Station. Cap City Brewery probably takes reservations, and is DC-based.

House side (SE) has restaurants on Pennsylvania Ave and on 2nd St. Tortilla Coast comes to mind, as does Capitol Lounge.

8th St SE is a bit of a hike from the Capitol itself in the summer time. Or maybe that's just me (I hate sweating).

washingtonian.com has pretty reliable reviews and will list by neighborhood.

We the Pizza and Good Stuff Eatery are great for kids, but not fancy. If you go there, I'd at at 11 or 2:30 or 5pm to avoid crowds.

Where is their hotel located? Capitol Hill is pretty large.

OP, none of the restaurants suggested here are anywhere near that hotel. I wouldn't really characterize that area as "Capitol Hill." I don't know of any restaurants near there except Subway-type places. Are they willing to get on the Metro? If they go to Eastern Market or Capitol South, you'll have more options. They could walk to Capitol South, but it might be a bit roundabout trying to get there because of the expressway. You could maybe do Tortilla Coast, right next to the Capitol South metro.

Tortilla Coast has kids menu, not crowded. It's a couple blocks from that hotel.

If your friends don't mind a 10-15 minute walk, how about going to Penn Quarter? There are many restaurants there, even Carmine's (from NY) which is a great family place. There is also decent brunch a the Hotel Monaco as well as Jaleo and the District Chop House.
