Feelings of not being able to breathe during sleep

Anonymous
I'm having a really weird problem. For the last 5 years or so, about once a month, I have the sensation of not being able to breathe during sleep. I'll be deeply asleep, and it's like the signal from my brain to my diaphragm is not working properly. I'll be trying to take a breath, but unable to. I estimate this senation lasts about 10 seconds. I never actually wake up from these episodes but I remember them in the morning. I feel intense panic during these episodes. Lately, they have been more frequent. I am unsure of what this could be. I have read about sleep apnea, but I don't have any daytime tiredness and I think this only occurs once during the night. I sleep really well and feel well rested when I wake up. I'm also young and thin so those are also not risk factors for sleep apnea. Has anyone had anything like this? I'm going to see a doctor about this but in the meantime I'm starting to get worried.

I have sleep apnea and never had daytime tiredness. There are also different types, some of which have nothing to do with weight. I suggest you make an appointment with a sleep doctor and get evaluated.

It could be a form of night terror

I've had this and also part of it for me is the sensation that I cannot wake up, which prolongs the "can't breathe" feeling. It is no fun at all.

Did you get it looked into? Did you get any kind of diagnosis?

I've had two panic attacks in my life. Both in the night, which woke me up. There was an incredible sense of suffocation and dread, as well as tingling fingers.

I experienced something like that when I was quite stressed. I'd just been diagnosed with cancer. The breathing thing was totally unrelated to the cancer - just a symptom of stress. Are you living through some kind of stress? Do you have allergies?
