How much do you have to spend once you get there?
I would fly into either Sacramento or San Jose, and rent a car. If I had lots of money to spend I would Napa, San Francisco and Monterrey. If I had enough time I would also drive down the Pacific coast hwy to San Simeon and Hearst CastleN and see Big Sur. If money and time were tight I would do a driving loop. One night in Napa, day trip through Calistoga to see the Old Faithful geyser, and up to Rockefeller Forest. I would get a cabin in one of the small towns along the north central part of the Avenue of Giants and spend a couple of days hiking and relaxing. |

Depends on what you're looking for (and the time of year). I'd consider any of these:
Seattle/Tacoma San Fransisco Las Vegas Salt Lake City Phoenix Denver Austin Houston Minneapolis New Orleans Somewhere in Florida, either Orlando for parks or somewhere else for beaches Charleston Nashville A lot of my locations choices are a) to visit family b) seasonal vacations http://www.southwest.com/html/cs/travel_center/routemap_dyn.html |

Oops, just realized you said no northwest. I thought you said no northeast.
I stand by the redwood trip. It is an amazing vacation. My second choice would be San Antonio, then Las Vegas to see Ka. |

Maybe Austin.
Or to Ft. Myers then drive out to Sanibel/Captiva islands. |
| New Mexico |
| Vegas, baby! But only in winter. |
Sorry, I skipped over the "no northwest" portion of your post. |
