Lest anyone think racism is dead because we have a black president. Nonsense like this occurs in our country everyday, still in the 21st century.

Sounds like church folk.

Gee, that's really "Christian.". I feel really sorry for that couple. One of their happiest days has been turned into a giant racist slap in the face.

I double-checked the date of the initial post, because I was sure it was an old thread that had been dredged up. Like from 1952. Nope - it was yesterday. Just appalling.

Not to sound like an idiot, but here it goes. How are they allowed to do that? Aside from racist, isn't that illegal? How horrible for that couple and their families!

I think a church is a private institution, and can't be forced to perform a wedding. There was another case in Louisiana a few years ago where a pastor or similar type wouldn't perform an interracial marriage.

Substitute "gay" for "black" and half of Congress will defend the church's right to not marry whomever it wants.

But that's different, right?

No one's saying the Church doesn't have a right not to marry whomever it wants - black, gay, whatever. It's appalling either way, though.

I think what you're trying to say is that it's sad that there isn't equal outrage among the general populace (and their elected representatives) when gay people are discriminated against. I agree with that.

It's ridiculous, especially as this was not a random couple off the street that liked the location. Their families worshiped there, and they were going to join on their marriage. This is apart of your congregation that you're shunning because of the color of their skin.

The members that had the problem with having the ceremony and the spineless pastor should be ashamed of themselves.

Are they afraid the KKK will burn the church down if they had married the couple? As an aside, the husband looks old enough to be his wife's grandfather. She looks like she's still in high school.

As repulsive as this is, a private institution cannot be forced to perform a wedding. It is also not illegal to have racist beliefs. You can belong to the KKK, and hate minorities. You cannot commit crimes against them. The price of living in a free society is that we have to accept the sometimes offensive views of others.

NO--the congregation IS the KKK! The blacks are good enough to receive tithes from but not to sully their church by allowing them to get married there. Not one of those people who objected is a true Christian. That is not what Christianity is about.

If they aren't good enough to be married in your church, why are you allowing them to attend services, join the congregation, and to tithe their money to your church? Why is it ok to employ blacks, like the brides uncle but it's not ok to allow this man's niece to be married here? Why not just refer all blacks to the church down the street, then you won't have any problems with uppity darkies sullying your vaunted institution.

I wonder if the members who protested the wedding are willing to make themselves known. I doubt it. The good news is they are likely old as dirt and will be dead before too long.
