Steve & Kate's Camp.... For the entire summer?

Anonymous
We’re seriously considering doing the whole summer for our rising 1st trader at the Alexandria site. The consistency sounds amazing. My daughter loves clothes so I expect she’ll spend more than 50% of her time in the “fashion” area - but I like the idea of her getting an unstructured summer that is still convenient for parents.

Bumping this because I'm sending my rising Kindergarten daughter (she turns 6 in October) to Steve and Kate's in Alexandria for the entire summer. We did the free winter movie night in they put on in December and she loved it. The only downside for us is that it's very doubtful she'll have any school or neighborhood friends there--we live in Vienna, but this is near my work so it's convenient in that way.

I keep asking her (with respect to this summer) "would you like to also do a week of xx camp here and there to mix it up or Steve and Kate's" - and the response is usually "Steve and Kate's"

My kids did not like Steve and Kate's because they do not really have any resources and they got bored. They do not want to go back.

What do you mean by resources? On the website it looks like they have everything and the kitchen sink: water slides, go carts, bread baking, sports, arts..

How was Steve and Kate's summer 2019 camp at Van Ness?

My DS (6) LOVED it. He really "drank the Koolaid" about it being child-directed and different, and therefore cooler than other camps. I was surprised because in other settings, he really hasn't done well in unstructured environments. But I think the key is that Steve and Kates provides structure while allowing kids to chose their activities, and not "interfering" in the activities, if that makes sense. And the activities are pretty fun. Based on some conversations I overheard, the Van Ness site was somewhat more crowded than the staff considers ideal, but I never felt like that impacted my kid. The ONLY critique I have is that I wish they provided a tiny bit more direct instruction in how to do some of the activities, because my DS actually learns best with some direct instruction as opposed to just figuring it all out himself. But that's a very small gripe overall.

My kids (5 and 8) attended for their second summer in a row and it remains their favorite camp, even more than the fancier camps with all the bells and whistles.

Any recent feedback on burke location?

It's been fine for my kids - we usually do a few days here and there over the summer. It's not a particularly large location so there can be waiting for desirable activities like baking, but overall they seem happy when I pick them up. (I would not do it for a whole summer like the 2016 poster suggested!)
