We have honored our commitments even when the situation wasn’t a positive one with two exceptions that were real outliers. The first was that our son was on a team at a small club that had completely fallen apart. He registered for the new year but we had concerns if they had enough strong players to replace those who had left. He was a starter on the A team and they ended up collapsing the A and B teams. We spoke to the TD and openly expressed concerns and he was released. The TD was a really good and ethical guy and knew that DS had a much better opportunity. He didn’t charge the remaining payments though we expected to be on the hook. The second was a a really bad situation where we felt the club was deceitful. We demanded to be let out of the contract as they had clearly breached it. It was an awful situation and since DS was in the midst of recruiting and they weren’t playing in showcases he knew he couldn’t stick it out. We would never have accepted a spot for any team with the expectation that we would back out if a better offer came along. You are taking a spot from a player who wants it and it puts the team at a disadvantage to have to find a late replacement. I’m not concerned for clubs that screw players over all the time but I’m concerned for the other players on the roster who are left with a weakened team.

With the situation where the club was deceitful -- was your son able to find a good spot somewhere else that same season? I want to believe that everything will work out fine and that I am just worrying for no reason, but also worried about rosters elsewhere being full if we were to end up in a really bad situation and needed to leave midyear. This is the first time our DS has a truly good additional option, and it's hard not to worry about possible regret if the first option ends up being bad.

No. It was too late. It sucked. The club basically hurt his recruitment options. Coaches who had told him they wanted to see him play again before offering him were unable to see him since the club didn’t register for showcases as promised. He then couldn’t find a new team to roster him for several months. This was a very unique situation so I’m not sure it applies to you. If you have a player committed for fall and it’s only April, you can see about getting out of it. Some clubs will let you out and some will make you pay. But do it right away. And next time, don’t rush to commit. Most clubs we found will give you an extra few days to decide on an offer if your player is good.

Do they actually have the player card when the current season is still ongoing? Doesn't that reside with the current team if its different than SYC?

No. Current team holds player cards. You can contact your current team to not release your player card to SYC. If you took another offer besides SYC, you can tell the current situation to your team admin and have player card released to anther team.
