Believe what you want. No doubt, 5%ish of kids will get in from a waitlist. But ask Potomac, Maret, GDS and Sidwell how many they waitlist. They won’t tell you. But it’s dozens for each accepted grade. They simply don’t reject in large numbers. It’s not my opinion, it’s fact. Some get rejected, for sure, but it’s a small minority of applicants at the schools that are particularly offenders.
My issue is that I think it’s just wrong that they would rather do that than be honest with families. Most who do not obsess about such things will believe that their kid has a real shot of getting in if they are in the waiting pool. They do not. |
| Agree it’s the size of the wait pool that is a problem. They could cut it in half and still have enough children of each type to choose from once accepted kids decide to go elsewhere. Why waitlist so many? |
Yes acceptance and FA come together |
Because giving Type A DC parents the 'ol "your child is amazing we just have too many qualified applicants for our number of seats so they're on the waitlist but rest assured your child is otherwise good enough" results in significantly fewer emails and calls asking for explanations and reassurance than if you say "no". |
