Hi fellow potential Swarthmore parent! My kid also hoping for Swat Friday would possibly ED2 to Bowdoin or Hamilton. Wash U is interesting - urban and bigger but a fantastic school of course. Good luck to your kid! |
Bowdoin needs to be mentioned for purposes of this thread because there is an ED disadvantage; it has a much lower unhooked ED admit rate and higher proportion of athletes in comparison to any “non-WASP” SLAC. |
Good luck with SWAT. If it comes to that, do not ED2 to Bowdoin: ED2 apps need to go down a rung. Much better chances ED2 at WashU and then Hamilton (in that order). |
This makes zero sense. Kids apply to Vandy RD because they don’t want to be bound, |
And you would be incredibly lucky to do so. It's a great school. |
100%, and it's an added boost if you indicate that you're fine with starting in either September or February. |
+1 my unhooked DD got accepted to Midd ED2 after Bowdoin ED1 rejection. She indicated preference for Sept but okay with Feb and got in for Sept |
Agree with this but you need to be very careful - Midd is a super tough admit. Your chances are better in ED2 than Regular, but still, the odds are very much stacked against you. |
Yes, but look who gets into Vandy during RD (all the HYPSM kids - very top of the class). They try and calculate their yield with their ED2 deferrals to RD. Examine your school's data and ask your CCO. Ours was very clear about the strategy. |
Bowdoin has a lower acceptance rate (6.8%) compared to these schools, including a lower ED acceptance rate (14.8%). USNWR ranks it above Pomona and its endowment is greater than Swarthmore. I don't care about an acronym but its a school that is definitely on par with the 4 that are represented in WASP. My kid hoping for ED2. |
I think it just doesn’t make sense to expand the WASP nonsense. It was already not meant to represent the “best”- there’s about 10-15 LACs with the same stats, similar endowments per students, etc. why not Wellesley? Why not CMC or Carleton? It was just a simple grouping since students tend to apply across these colleges and they come up A LOT on dcum. Go back a literal year and Pomona had the lowest acceptance rate and higher rank and highest yield. Next year it might be Williams or Swarthmore. It’s all arbitrary. |
|
Look away from LACs - with athletes hogging many of the spots, it is a crapshoot for most kids who don't get that coach bump.
I would look at WashU. Really strong academics like Williams but offers a real opportunity in ED rounds (unlike Williams). |
And nothing like an LAC. Bunch of nonsense. Look at Dartmouth if you want better chances and an LAC environment and don’t listen to fools. |
| How did this student make out at Williams? |
Middlebury, Wesleyan, Vassar, Haverford. |
