Service Hours Question

Seems like if scouts has a requirement then the hours you "volunteer" to make that requirement shouldn't count toward something else, but maybe most scouts go above and beyond and have extra to allocate to school service hours?

Interesting perspective. If someone does service hours through a youth group, would you also say that's double-dipping? What if someone volunteers through Brothers & Sisters of America? What if you volunteer through the county? Are all those double-dipping? If that's the case, I guess I'd struggle to figure out what would count at all for these civics hours. Tutoring other kids in civics and that's it?

Just because the service you do is organized by or benefits a community group, I'm not sure I'd see that as disqualifying.

My kid got their Civics hours helping a couple elementary schools set up for and run their Fall festivals this year, and helping another school with a book donation event by evaluating book condition and sorting them / boxing them up and loading them into the truck. None of those hours can be double-counted toward their NJHS hours.

Our middle school is on paper. Why is it so hard for FCPS to be consistent and send out guidance.

My son does lots of service for scouts - above and beyond. I did not track hours for middle school (he is a freshman now). No one said a thing. If it was required no one told us. I figured if it came down to it we could use the “extra” scout hours.

I think for honor societies it is required.

Nothing was required at Kilmer in 8th or if it was, it wasn’t verified or checked. Both of mine were in honors, before you ask.

This only matters if your kid joins NHS in HS and then only matters in HS. There is no requirement to graduate.

NJHS requires it at our MS for 8th grade. It is a requirement.
