For many of us, our mothers were in love with him.

Mothers *and* daughters, in the case of me and my mom.

+2 They don't make them like they used to. He was one of the last great ones.

A Walk in the Woods is great too!

All is Lost is amazing, and interesting because Redford was often at his best as an acting partner -- with Paul Newman in The Sting and Butch Cassidy, with Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were, here with Dustin Hoffman in All the President's Men: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXacLvKGrQ0

If you have kids, the Peres dragon live action remake was really really good and under appreciated. It came out about 2012 I think. He plays the grandpa.

Last Days of the condor is also so good and not one of his better know works.

Is any channel doing a marathon of his work? I would just record it all. Not sure which are on streaming — if anyone knows please post!

We’ll never be young and cool like you, spending your time on a forum for middle-aged parents

He was as beautiful young man and a talented, extremely thoughtful director.

I normally feel really sad with this kind of news but knowing he was 89 years old, really helps. It's not too soon, it is a life well lived.

When I was in 7th grade science in the early 80s my teacher asked us to write on a piece of paper what we most wanted for Christmas. He taught 7th, 8th and 9th graders. He said the difference between us was that 7th graders still wanted chocolate and lego while 9th graders were asking for "Robert Redford"

A gorgeous, charismatic man. I loved him. I also feel like Brad Pitt is the only similar one today in both looks and charisma.

The same week his catalogue closed (leaving tons of unpaid artists in its wake). RIP redford

I loved watching his movies. If you haven’t seen Sneakers, I highly recommend it.

Some others I enjoyed:
The Sting
Spy Game
Legal Eagles

Just the thought of that smile makes me melt.

Redford was also an accomplished director. In the movie Ordinary People he took a story that might have been a boring suburban melodrama and turned it into a haunting character study. His casting and collaboration with Mary Tyler Moore, playing totally against type, is extraordinary.

The Way We Were and The Great Gatsby
are two of my favorites, we have lost too many iconic actors and singers this year, this one hurts. Rest in peace

Brad Pitt is great, but not even close to Redford in either category. The man was truly on a planet all his own.

A beautiful actor with as beautiful a soul. He really was the OG. Figured it would be soon though, as he was climbing in years but what a movie star..

These new ones really don't compare. The only one close is Clooney, in terms of scope of abilities and interest in wanting to make more than a dollar. But there really aren't any move stars left...

But man - him and Brad Pitt - the similarity is truly astounding!
