ONG, get a grip. With all that's out there, this is a worry that will kill you!

The more important thing is whether your kid knows the difference between right and wrong. If so, no external thing is going to influence him that intensely.

I play for my kids Beastie Boys and my athlete 12 yr old DD listens to some bad Eminem as hype music. It's fun and it's not anything to be worried about. She's a straight A student so you know...

Relax. My DH (who is also black) grew up listening to Compton’s Most Wanted, NWA, Ice-T, and all the others that came with the "advisory labels" He's incredibly nice, respectful, a feminist, former military officer and current C level at a FAANG. Somehow he didn't grow up to be....whatever it is you are worried about.

That being said, my 11 year old has been listening to some inappropriate tunes! The lyrics talk about drugs and say some VERY disrespectful things towards woman. He’s specifically listening to King Von, a rapper from Chicago who raps about his many crimes. I fear that if I restrict the music he’ll want to rebel even more but the music is really making me worried.

OK, maybe DS can listen to the wholesome POTUS instead.

There’s no way this is true.

Other than only listening to the clear versions of songs, I’m not sure there’s much to do here. I loved Red Hot Chili Peppers when I was that age. Under the Birdge was about passing out and dying from a heroin overdose in the outskirts of a town hollowed out by deindustrialization and crime. I just liked how it sounded.

To be fair, today's female rappers reduce men to members and wallets.

When my son was younger he was into rap and other genres of music that talked extensively about activities and values that I am not in alignment with. I reassured myself by repeatedly reminding myself that I also listen to and watch many many things that are not in alignment with how I want to behave and I am in no way encouraged to do drugs and rob people when I listen to the greatful dead or Willie Nelson's Poncho and Lefty (just kidding this is a joke).

At that time, he was listening while I was driving him around in the car and I while I did not restrict his access to anything, I did make him discuss the misogyny and portrayals of women in particular. That was the price to listen. He had to examine it critically with me- at least sometimes.

He's older now and that phase has passed. I don't think restricting it would have done any good.

First time you ever heard real rap eh? That's still light-core stuff compared to hardcore rap and especially to street level underground rap.

Drill rap is not light-core, why would you say that?

By comparison to other genres it is.

By comparison to other genres it is not light core. Pop music, rock music whatever is left, hip hop. I’d rather have my kids under 14 listen to rappers like Cardi B than the violent ones.

Cardi B co raps WAP, so...

Did he also listen to Paris, 2Live crew and Getto Boys? I (white F) listened to all that, plus death metal, plus progressive music and even some country. The country was the worst, imo, because of sexism and glorifying alcoholism. I grew up to be a very wholesome mom...with anedge, lol.
