Ideas for new MS dress code at SSSAS

Can someone explain?

Apparently the administration really wants girls in dresses so they’ve said if a girl wants to wear pants she has to wear a collared polo like the LS kids!?! What!?!?

And denim isn't allowed but leggings are? Wut?

US parent here, but blue denim isn’t allowed. Colored denim is, except on chapel days. So they can wear white or black or whatever other color jeans except blue jeans.

There were pictures sent with the summer letters recently. It looks like band collars and turtlenecks or mocknecks work too. Plenty of options.

Most parents I know are sending their girls with those detachable dickey collars and their regular clothes.

Where on earth would you get that assumption? Kids can wear a sweater, a sweatshirt, a dress, or a shirt with a collar....ruffle collar, peter pan collar, polo, button up, etc. This isn't that deep.

This is actually what I heard too (that they want girls in dresses). I guess the head of school is really conservative?

Also btw how many girls shirts have ruffle or peter pan colors?!?

They should just do a uniform.

Dickeys and Peter Pan collars in 2025? This is very strange.

Ya’ll need to chill. It’s not that bad.

LOL - we’re calling it a “removable collar” in our house. I don’t want to deal with the tween/teen fallout from the word “dickey.” 😂

It’s pretty stressful for girls, although many will just wear dresses and they are fine.

But really I think the outrage is just a feeling that so many moms of girls complained and they don’t seem to care.

The girl vibe at the MS is a problem.

So to me this speaks to issues with the parents, not the schools. The school is trying to manage dress for middle schoolers who are often the most aggressive at pushing boundaries. It’s the only division at Potomac school that is required to wear a uniform and there is a good reason for it. Shorts are SO short, crop tops are so short. Skirts barely cover butts, bras are hanging out. It’s not appropriate and yet girls wear it all and parents allow it. Yes… it makes shopping a little harder and the girls can’t wear exactly what they want to wear but that is the point. So the parents gripe. But the school standing by its decision is completely appropriate. If parents want the Wild West, go to public.

Actually most parents want a uniform! The school won’t do it, but they also won’t just let kids wear clothes because they want kids to “present” a certain way (no blue jeans, no athletic clothes, but leggings are ok, shirts must have a collar, but dresses have no restrictions, shoulders must have two inch straps, but skirts and shorts can be any length). It’s the result of some weird compromise that doesn’t make sense.

I will never understand the leggings being okay thing.

It’s because that’s a huge portion of what’s available in girls’ clothing. I appreciate it!

It’s bizarre. I too would prefer an actual uniform than this. So confusing! I guess by “collared” they really mean they don’t want skimpy straps but instead top with a full neckline.

So for a new sixth grader, do you think a few simple skorts and polo shirts will be a good buy?
