Ross was mentally unwell and had a history of public outbursts. He accidentally burned his owned house down and accidentally killed his own dogs.

It was a sad situation all around, and he mixed it up with a hothead neighbor who killed him. That's a crime and it is being prosecuted.

SAPD Homicide is currently investigating the murder of Mr. Jonathan Joss. Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that the Mr. Joss’s murder was related to his sexual orientation. This sounds more like a neighbour dispute. The neighbours may have been homophobic but it seems there was a lot more to it then just then being gay.
