OP here. Busted. I am Canadian. I love all of your reactions it felt infantilizing, and he was a creepy older man who looked like he drinks a lot. He wasn’t there for introductions, and I think he thought that I was one of the students.

It is an annoying phrase, but then so is "washroom." It's either bathroom or restroom.
