Advice on Schools - moving from Ireland

Listen to all the ultra progressive loud mouths here steering OP's kids away from majority-minority schools! The best way to end racism is to get white kids into brown schools.

Buy or rent in Silver Spring and send your kids to the Blair cluster schools. That's the real America. We live here and it's fantastic.

Another option is the British International school in Georgetown. My kids ( American) went there about 10 years ago. Yes, it isn't perfect but, if you hope to return to Ireland it might closely fit your academic goals. It is worth a look.

European, but not Irish, neighbor was happy with Washington Intl School. Worth a look-see.

Montgomery County public schools are generally good. Several Red Line metro stations are in Montgomery County just north of DC. Look at those neighborhoods also.

As someone else said, if IB would useful (and even if it might not be) I’d look at the BCC cluster (Westland or Silver Creek MSs)

You'll note that the people calling everyone racist for suggesting you avoid DCPS send their kids to the whitest of DC public schools and llive in the whitest areas of DC.

But it is accurate that "the best" DCPS middle/high school are middling at best. You are definitely better off in private or some of the burbs, if you are indeed concerned about education.

I believe 5th grade is still part of the full immersion program so entry at that point may not be possible or at least inadvisable. Some kids join in 6th grade but I believe they need pretty intensive language training (at school) to get to the level required in middle school. Best to ask to speak to other families who have done that to find out about their experiences.

This is accurate. DC parents are constantly trying to figure out when and how to move to the suburbs when they don’t win the high school lotteries.

Look at Norwood school. Private, your kids would be in their middle school and then would have to move schools for ninth grade. It is always worth asking if they have any “late” openings for admissions for next year.

Norwood isn’t close to the metro and having one kid in Norwood and one at another school can make for a complicated commute, especially if one parent had to handle getting kids to school.

This is accurate. DC parents are constantly trying to figure out when and how to move to the suburbs when they don’t win the high school lotteries.

But the lotteries ensure equitable distribution of scarce resources.

MoCo schools are fine.

The system even used to be one of the best. Just know ahead of time the bathrooms are unsafe, if open at all (they’ll are frequently locked during the school day, for safety reasons). But the education is fine in most schools.

Hi op,

The DCPS is so dysfunctional and dangerous that President Obama refused to send his children to any school in the District (and he was offered his choice; no questions asked). The DC mayor at the time begged Obama. Obama still sent his kids to private.

Now you know what kind of horrific school system the democrats/ DC run here. Proceed accordingly.
