When did your son hit his growth spurt?

Around 14.5-15.5 for mine. Grew about 5 inches from one summer to the next, then tacked on a few more inches more slowly.

My DS barely grew at all in middle school and was one of the smallest boys at 8th graduation, after being pretty average sized to tall as a kid. The vast majority of the boys grew a LOT in middle school or from around 12-14. I found there to be a lot of stories about later bloomers online but IRL my DSs growth pattern has seemed really unusual. Not sure why the difference.

DS1 at 12 and DS2 seems to be starting growth spurt and about to turn 13

DS1 was definitely early. Most of his friends seemed to grow in 8th/early 9th - but I definitely know kids who still looked like little kids through sophomore year.

FWIW DS1 was really obsessed/excited with how tall he was going to be as an adult when he hit 5’9” at 13. Now at 15 he’s only 5’10.5 and readjusting his expectations as all the other kids catch up!

DS also has a summer birthday and on the younger side for his grade. He started 9th grade at around 5'1". He had his first growth spurt beginning of 10th grade and shortly after turning 15. He grew a little over 3 inches in about six months. He's 5'6" now. Doctor says he's still on the early side of puberty and expect him to continue to grow long after his many of peers are done growing.

yep, DS was a late bloomer. He was about 5' going into HS. Growth spurt hit during covid when he was 15/16. He's almost 19 now, and close to 5'11", still growing.

I have a 10th grade daughter with a large friend group so I’ve observed some of the boys - some I see a lot and some I saw in 9th and they pop up at my house this year after a good 9 months.

I feel like summer after 9th and this year 10th sooooo many boys grew. Many look kinda awkward too right now. And the junior boys all look like men so I think they grow at 15/16 and then fill out at 16/17.

My daughter had a boyfriend last year who looked pretty filled in at age 14/15 and last time I saw him he honestly looked about the same at 16 so the earlier they go through it often means they stop earlier.

I think my kid hit early at 12. He is 5’10’ at 13 and not growing much now. I keep trying to tell him he may not be that tall, but he is hoping for a little more.

Most of his friends are Asian, and still on the shorter side at the end of 8th.

Some of his friends who have parents from India are catching up in 8th.

What is considered a growth spurt? My son just turned 14 a few days ago and grew 4.25” from last year, but he generally grows about 3” or so yearly typically.

My son is 15 1/4 and still at the end of Tanner 2. But I would say most of his friends hit their growth spurt in the last 2 years. He's a late bloomer.

This is the best advice right here. My son's dr was able to look at his growth chart and tanner stage and let me know how much more she thought he might grow (in our case, hopefully not that much more)

My DS was in early Tanner 2 at 13yo appt after showing no signs of puberty at all at 12yo appt. Ped told us it would most likely still be 1-2 years (possibly even more) before growth spurt really started. Sure enough DS started growing really quickly as he closed in on age 15. If the ped is tracking Tanner Stage they can usually give an idea (at least somewhat) of when the growth spurt will start.

Parents would not usually know what is happening in early puberty unless kid mentions it. Even thought the ped said puberty had started at 13, my DS looked outwardly like a little kid to me until 14.5-15.

10th grade for my sons. Late bloomers. The 18-year old went from 5’4” to 6” now in 12th and might have an inch or so left.

My current 10th grader just turned 16 (April) and grew a lot the last few months. He was 5’3” in 9th and about 5’8” now and has a ton of growing to do. No facial hair yet and skinny/lanky, long limbs. He recently went back to play on a team with kids ftom 8th grade and I was amazed at the kids that used to tower over him are now sane height or shorter and filled out/stocky.
