We tend to keep about 2 months worth of expenses in our checking at any given time (if there's extra it goes into savings). Is this excessive? What do other people do?
3k give or take. There is more in there on pay day, but once the bills are paid, that is the average daily balance.
I *just* got a savings account, so previously kept ALL my money in my checking account. Now I'm thinking I'll just move money from savings to checking each time I am about to write a check.
400 dollars is my zero, meaning I never go below 400. However the account is linked to a savings account that has 20 to 25k in it at all times.
We only keep about $1K in there as a baseline "cushion", but the balance fluctuates by as much as $20K depending on where we are in the monthly cycle of income and outgo. I have a percentage of my paycheck put directly into a savings account each pay period, too.
Anywhere from $10-50k. Just dipped below $10k today because I paid my DCs college tuition for the fall semester. I used to move more between checking and savings but stopped bothering when interest became meaningless.
|
It really varies, partly due to some weird tax stuff. We make quarterly payments to the IRS so we get influxes of cash and then make big payments regularly.
We usually have around 4-5k otherwise though. In savings we have about 20k. The rest of our money is tied up in various retirements/investment accounts. |
A few hundred. Most cash is either in the money market fund that can transferred as needed (up to six transfers a month) but requires a phone call or in savings and can be transferred online. The interest in piddling but I don't see the point of keeping too much cash in checking.

Nothing.
We have a checking account that automatically pulls from savings with no fee. |
I try never to go below $3000 only because I use debit cards (no credit cards for me!) but... I have 3 checking accounts, attached to 3 different savings accounts, one of which is attached to an investment account. Ugh, if it wasn't for Mint my head would spin.
I keep about 3k in my checking too. Anything extra goes right to savings.
We have two and only keep a few hundred in each. I monitor the balances very closely and make transfers from savings as needed.
$1000 is my baseline, anything above that goes into savings.
10k, average.
Today, zero, but normally a few hundred.
