What would you wear to this cocktail party?

Anonymous
I'm attending a rather large business convention in Boston, and on the last night of the convention, will attend a cocktail party at Boston Symphony Hall. The theme of the party is a Mad-Men style "glamorous cocktail event". This is the first convention I've attended in a long, long time. Do I really wear cocktail attire?? Or do I just wear gussied-up business attire (like a black sheath with some additional bling)? Yes...I am challenged in these types of things.

This is a tough one. I'd hate to get all cocktailed out, and find that everyone else was in business attire.

I'd tend to wear something business-appropriate but that can do the job, e.g. a sheath dress in a color (not black), worn with a jacket by day and with nice jewelry/heels in the evening.

I would follow the theme and go for glam cocktail attire. Chances are 50% will follow the theme and the other half will wish they did.

I would go for dressed up business attire. Black sheath with statement jewelry, fabulous shoes.

Vogue has done a couple of Mad Men spreads and a number of designers last year did some MM-inspired A-lines. They were gorgeous. I wish we could really bring it back.

But, in the meantime, maybe this will help: http://www.vogue.co.uk/news/2011/08/22/mad-men-fashion-and-style---banana-republic-collection/gallery

I'm sorry but that previous dress is total school mark.

OP just wear a black a-line with nice jewelry and you'll be neither under or overdressed.

school mark = school marm

You're just jealous b/c your body would look terrible in it.

Yes, it's vintage 50s. I can't find the store, however.

New poster here. It may be 1950s but it looks just like the Spring Dance dress that Brenda and Kelly were both wearing.

Nothing school marm about that dress. It is classic, classy elegance.

Depends on your body type and what you are willing to spend (prob based on whether you think it could be worn again to a wedding or other cocktail function). I just did a quick run through Kate spade, milly, and shoshanna and there are at least 50 dresses that could work and are gorgeous.

Even so, I like the version she posted above. Ignore the haters.

P.S. Team Brenda!!

Look at Banana Republic - they have/had a "mad men" line, and I know they are currently marketing a number of their dresses as work day to post-work going out, and they show how to make that change for the dress with different shoes, jewelry, etc.
