If you go the DC public elementary route, and switch to private for middle & high school, what happens to those summer and fall kids? My son is a August baby, so would be in 1st grade in DC public, but K for most private schools. Do the private schools take younger kids in the higher grades, or are the kids held back, or just not admitted? Any advise is helpful on this. Thanks! |
Most of the private schools have a September cutoff. The DC Public schools used to have a Dec. 31 cutoff, but they changed it a couple years back, so now it's in line with the private schools. |
OP here. Although the technical cutoff for everyone but GDS is 9/1 (GDS is 6/1), I have been told by everyone and their brother (including admission staff) that the actual cutoff for non-siblings is June 1st. So my question is, what happens to the summer kids who aren't redshirted when they try to get into private schools in the later years? Do people redshirt in DC public schools in preparation for applying to private for middle/high school? After all, if GDS moved officially to 6/1, how far behind can the others be? If not, has anyone had success getting admitted to private middle school with a summer b-day kid? |
It would seem to me that by, say, 9th grade, or even 7th, a private school would not care at all when a child's birthday falls.
But what do I know? Can you ask an admissions officer? |
