Concerned about my kids being exposed to "Mosquito Squad" spraying

Anonymous
Ok so my neighbors had their yard sprayed THREE times by the Mosquito Squad. I guess they felt like it did not work the first time?!?! I see men in masks and full uniforms over there spraying away. There is NO WAY this is OK for my kids to be around. I am really disappointed in my neighbor for proceeding to spray pesticides all over their yard which will obviously get all over my yard and others' yards. We all know pesticides do not stay put. Not to mention the harm to the environment, animals, birds, etc.

Anyway, what should I do? I have not been able to let me kids outside to play in like a week. I have to drive them somewhere to play. Does anyone know how long it takes for these pesticides to fade and the danger of them?

Its their yard and their right to do it. Mind your own business. Do them a favor and keep your kids out of their yard and then its a non-issue for both of you.

Hopefully a big rain will come through this afternoon. I think that would really wash away all those horrible pesticides into the local streams and rivers. Yuck!

Yes it's supposed to rain this afternoon. OP here, I live in row houses in Glover Park and they might spray their yard, but it clearly got on my yard and neighbors yard. I live near a park with creek so pesticides can run off there and into the potomac river where we have 3-eyed fish.

wow, at least they could TRY to find something natural to use instead.

It dries in about 30 minutes - you could've been playing outside all day. Unless your kids are in your neighbor's yard licking the vegetation?

If it makes you feel better, when we were kids in the south in the 80s, the whole neighborhood was routinely sprayed. I turned out ok, unless your kids have extreme chemical sensitity issues or asthma you are overreacting.

I would never use MS for many reasons, including the products they use, but I'm sure your kids are fine playing in your yard.

I'm not familiar with Mosquito Squad, but personally use Mosquito Authority. The guys don't wear masks and claim everything is natural. If you don't want to spray (or don't want your neighbors to spray - which, honestly, I'm of the camp that you have no right to decide how they treat their property) you're not going to like this, but I've found that the Mosquito Authority products don't wash off after rain. The leaves remain a little sticky. Good luck with your situation. (And while you and I disagree, I really don't mean this in a snarky manner at all. It is tough to have a disagreement like this in such close quarters.)

I had a bad experience with Mosquito Squad. They actually accidentally sprayed my dog with all the chemicals. It was through a chain link fence and they claim they did not see him. My neighbors were the ones spraying -- not me.

We had to take the dog to the vet and he got very sick. He is OK now but this was after round and rounds of vet visits. After abut 4 weeks, he seemed better and the vet thought that the chemicals eventually left his system.

My husband will not let me call Mosquito Squad for all the reaons others have cited above. He also won't let me use Deet on the kids. I guess he would rather let us get West Nile or Lyme disease or have to stay cooped up inside after school and all weekends because it is too buggy outside to stand it.
I can't blame someone for worrying a little bit, but OP sounds like she is off the deep end on this one.
Our neighborhood in DC is terrible with the mosquitoes.

concentrated garlic oil has been shown to work as well, if not better, than spraying the yard. And no, it doesn't make your yard smell like a hippy potluck.

We use MS and they say the yard is safe to play in once the product dries - usually 30 minutes or so. I think your kids are ok playing in your untreated yard unless they go to your neighbor's yard and eat the grass - but then again I clearly don't have as big an issue with MS as you do. Mosquitoes are a bigger reason for me not to go outside than MS is.

I'd be more pissed that all their mosquitoes are now going to be in your yard.
