the Washington area celiac support group website has a database of all the celiac friendly restaurants (including those with GF menus) in the DC area and other locations around the country and the world.

Jaleo has an extensive menu

Dino in Cleveland Park - they will even swap out polenta for pasta in many dishes.

Lilit Cafe in Bethesda has a gluten free menu and kitchen.

Original Pancake House in Rockville and Bethesda has good gluten free pancakes.

Pete's Apizza in Friendship Heights (and other locations) has gluten free pasta and pizza.

Some places have gluten free options but aren't really aware about what gluten is or how to avoid cross contamination. The above are safe and very good.

I've had good luck with Chipotle as well (I get a burrito bowl).

PF Chang's and Wildfire are both great. They note the allergies on your ticket anD food is prepared in a separate area.

I just had a friend with celiac disease in town for the weekend. I'm not sure if you're asking for yourself or a friend, OP, so sorry if I'm telling you things you already know.

You need to be careful about "gluten free" options in a restaurant. It's not a matter of simply having a dish with no gluten in the components. As my friend said, "It's all in the preparation." For example, corn chips in a Mexican restaurant have no gluten, but are they fried in the same oil as breaded items? If so, they can make a person with celiac sick. You really need to talk to the manager and/or chef and find out exactly how the foods are prepared.

My friend recommends Chili and PF Changs as the best gluten-free chain restaurants. I would be wary of gluten free pizza-- again, is it prepared in the same kitchen as other pizza dough?

When she was here, we ate at Sweetgreen and Nando's Peri Peri, both of which had good GF options and preparation techniques.
