We are planning to rent out our house for and we are struggling to figure out the process of registering with the DC Gov't and would like to ask for help. We know we need to apply for a Basic Business License (BBL) and as part of this we need register our "business" with the DC Office of Tax and Revenue using form FR500, the combined business tax registration application. We submitted the FR 500 but are not sure:
- What is the application fee for BBL? - When will we get the FR500 tax registration certificate to include with the BBL? - What other documents to include with BBL application? - What additional forms have to be filled annually or provided to the tenant? Also, we found out that the house must pass inspection by the Consumer and Regulatory Affairs' Inspections Division. How do we schedule such inspection? Finally, I am getting conflicting information as to whether we need to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy. You help and advice is much appreciated. Thank you in advance. |
I think this webpage covers most of the information that you are looking for, in case you haven't seen it. I'd refer to the contact numbers there for further information and questions as well.

OP here! Thank you. |
Congratulations! You'll be the first landlord who bothered to go through this pointless, expensive process (assuming you're able to complete it -- that inspection is NEVER gonna happen.)
We rent two units on the Hill. No certificate of occupancy, no business license, no nothing. And every one of our tenants is a lawyer. |
