Eastern High School has the second highest Read 180 percentage growth.

Congrats to Eastern Senior High School. They had the second highest percentage of Read 180 students meeting the ambitious goal of two years' growth in reading in one year, of all DCPS high schools. This is typically a harder target for HS than MS. This Eastern's first year with the Read 180 program -- and schools usually improve over time. Also let's give a shout-out to Ms. Jarrard, who taught all of the those classes.

For those wondering who recieved first place honors it was Columbia Heights Educational Center.

That's great news, i guess. How depressing that we even have to use this for really poor readers in our HIGH SCHOOLS -- and yes, Capitol Hill parents, this tells you all you really need to know about the future of Eastern.

As a Capitol Hill parent, i think this tells me very little about the future of Eastern. Sounds like the EAstern High administrators, teachers and students are working hard to make up for lack luster elementary and middle school education. It is tough to say what Easter's future will be, but this gives me hope.

Anyway, congrats to eastern and to CHEC!

Let's not just celebrate what they did, let's hear how they did it and what it means. Where did their reading ability start and where is it now? How is that going to be maintained and improved?

What does it mean in practical terms - what kinds of materials can students read now that they couldn't before? let's talk to some students and see how they think program helped them and changed them.

It's about the kids, right? So it shouldn't just be a matter of praising the teacher and the school.

11:43, remind me not put you in charge of anyone's celebration or happiness report. I'll go out on a limb, why don't you just march yourself up the ramp at Eastern and inquire with the school personnel. I have a pretty strong feeling that the school will put you in touch with all the necessary kids you will need to validate your worries. Gee-whiz,

10:42, that response is somewhat double-edged with worry and doubt. Eastern future is now and there's nothing tough about it. The school is moving right along at the steady pace, that it was prescribed. As a result, we are accomplishing things quicker.

Just be happy for the students, as it is a goal that is recognized by the school system that you are part of at the moment. To discredit this accomplishment or not appreciate it for what it is worth, only shows more hatred than harmony.

I have a suggestion why not volunteer you services with the Read 180 program @ Eastern and you then can gauge for yourself what is actually in store for the future.
There's nothing like the present.

I agree - this a good sign and it is incumbent on those who doubt to get involved to help move the goals post.

11:43 hit it right on. This says nothing about the school but just gives general facts without specifics. What if only 2 kids were in the program and only one met the ambitious goal? That would be a 50% rate. Is that so great? Please. We are not that dumb.

If you want to show the achievement then show it. But barring any facts this is just another blah, blah, blah post which celebrates a whole lot of mediocrity.

And this is just silly. Doubters need to be disproven. They don't have any reason to become involved.

Well, since MCPS uses the same program at BCC and Whitman, schools that are consistently highly nationally ranked, I guess it tells Capitol Hill parents that in the future their kids can get a great education at Eastern too.

That is what you meant right?

I think what PP meant is the facts. Lots of schools use the program. What percentage of kids in each school use the program?

Why do you make it so hard?

Hey self-doubters of Eastern!!! I am taking up a collection to purchase a banner to be posted in the school to "showcase" Read 180 students recent accomplishment. Any takers? Drop off your donations to the school, it will be greatly appreciated. And for those who want to put Eastern down at least you can come and help put up the poster. Sweat equity is a valuable tool too.

00:13, the questions poised was not to prove a fact but to denounce an accomplishment. You must be new to this blog.

I went up to Eastern yesterday and couldn't get in the darn building what's the problem? Maybe, everyone was in the rear of the building celebrating, we all know how the Ramblers like to Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaartay!!!!

I see the crazy McKinley/Easten parent is on the loose again. Well, we shouldn't let the antics of a loose nut detract from the encouraging work of the students and staff. Congratulations Eastern!

Who are you talking about Willis?

What's with the mad rush for being an incoming freshmen at Eastern. It seems ESHS will have the largest influx of freshmen for the upcoming school year. Good news travels fast.
