Parking in Provincetown?

Anonymous
Anyone have any recommendations for parking in Provincetown, MA? We will drive there, but won't need the car again until we leave. Anyone have any experience with the free Massachusetts Park-n-Ride lots? Do they fill up super early or will we actually have a shot at getting a spot if we go that route? Alternately, does it make more sense to pay and keep the car in town? TIA

Where are you staying in Ptown?

Parking is hell. I'd consider (dep. on where you're staying) just finding a spot on the street well out of the commercial area and working around any restrictions (can't recall if there are street cleaning days &c.). We usually park out on the West End (Commercial or a side street if available) where my grandfather rented a house from the 30s to 60s and just walk into the center of town. I don't recall what the long term rates are in the town lot(s) away from the wharf (which is expensive).

I think unless you plan to spend the whole vacation in Ptown, having the car available is a good idea. There are so many great beaches on the cape, and the National Seashore Park, the lighthouses etc. Not to mention cute towns like Wellfleet.

We just got back, I don't think you will be able to find ANY street parking, or if you do it will be really lucky and not something to count on. There's a reason there are $10 lots all over the place.

Where are you staying that you don't have parking?

The cheapest short term parking lot is the one at the wharf in the middle of town. It's $3 an hour. Of course if you know you will leave the car there sun-up to sun-down, there are lots of $10 lots.

11:23 here ... totally agree on having a car being a good idea... if you just stay in Ptown you're not really getting the true Cape Cod experience; Truro is similar to what it was like in the 50s-60s still and Wellfleet is still more like it was then than Ptown ...

OP here. We'll have a car, it just won't be our car. Two families going on vacation together. They get the parking spot at the rental house this year, we'll get it next year. We're staying sort of near that main parking area on the wharf, but that place seems like it would be crazy expensive for what we need (a week). Plus, because the other family will have their car we can park outside of P-town and have them ferry us to and from the lot. But, we don't want to be so far away that it's a 45 minute drive to the parking lot either.

Parking on the street in P'town is hell and definitely not an option.

PS - OP again - pretty familiar with the Cape b/c my family had a house in Brewster for almost 50 years. We sold it though and this is my first year navigating the Cape without having our normal home base (and large driveway!).
