Does Your 15 Month Old Nap?

Anonymous
My son use to nap twice a day, he is down to once a day if at all. Isn't this too young to quit taking naps? If I get him to nap at all it is close to 3pm which is kind of late considering I like to have him ready for bed by 8pm. Taking a two hour nap at 3pm pushes back bedtime. Is this normal?

my 18 mos old still naps around noon. i have to keep him very active all morning mostly outside the house when possible (at park, running errands, etc) in order for him to take a good nap. i also make sure he has had something to eat and some milk before the nap so that he doesn't wake up early due to hunger. his nap is very important to me b/c i also nap then (i'm pregnant aagain), so i do everything possible to wear him out & then calm him down and feed him before noon. good luck.

My 15-month-old generally naps from noon to 2:30 (daycare-imposed schedule). With us on weekends, he often takes 2 shorter naps, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. He sleeps from 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. till 6:00 or 6:30 a.m.

I think it's a bit early. If you have a copy of Ferber, check it because it discusses dropping naps. I think a small number of children drop the last nap sometime in their second year. But 15 months sounds early.

My 16-month-old naps from 9:30AM - anywhere between 11:00AM and 11:30AM. She takes a second nap somewhere in the middle of the day.....maybe starting anywhere between 3PM and 5PM, but only for 20-40 minutes. She then sleeps usually from around 8PM - 6:30AM. I start her first nap around 3 hours from whenever she woke up.

My 13-month old dropped her afternoon nap about 2 months ago. Her old morning nap has been shifted to early afternoon, and she naps for about 2-2.5 hours. At night she sleeps from 8/8:30 to around 6:30. It works for her, and she seems full of energy, but I think it's a bit unusual to drop a nap so early. Must be genetic - my mother says I stopped napping althogether a few months before my 2nd birthday.

My 16 mos. old wakes around 7am, naps from 1pm-2pm and goes to bed at 8:30pm. At least once or twice a week, the middle of the day nap doesn't happen or is only about 1/2 hour. She seems ok - wish she would nap longer.

My 15 m.o. naps twice a day. She rises early (6 am), so she naps around 9:30 or 10 for an hour or more, and then around 4 for another hour or so. She usually goes to sleep around 8.
My older daughter gave up naps around 18 months.

Could he possibly be over-tired and by 3pm just unable to fall asleep? Many 15 month-olds are down to one naps per day, usually right on the middle of the day (eg. 12-3). If he really sems to wake for the day refreshed and happy, is pretty much happy all day (other than the usual toddler mood-swings), and falls asleep easily (and stays asleep) at night, then I would say he is fine not napping. Otherwise, maybe try to see if you can do some wind-down activity right after an early lunch (reading, rocking, singing, etc.) and help entice him to sleep a little.

My daughter stopped taking two naps about about 12 months and she's been fine. She is now almost two and I suspect she'll be ready to give up her everyday naps any day now. However, her daily naps start between 12:30 and 2 and go from 1-3 hours depending on how tired she is. We typically get to bed by 8 with some exceptions here and there. Every child is unique. As long as your child isn't cranky, he/she is getting the sleep he/she needs. My philosophy is that as long as I give her the opportunity to get sleep, she will be fine.
