4th Picnic

Anonymous
Looking for picnic suggestions for a family of 3 for the fireworks - vegetarian (eggs/dairy are ok).

We'll be walking about a mile to the event, but can take a stroller with us. We're not going downtown, but it's still a crowded venue.

do you really need to eat dinner there? If not, just bring dessert and drinks.

melon cubes, grapes, blueberries, etc. Fruit helps keep you hydrated and doesn't have to be kept very cold.

I've been craving hummus and felafel sandwiches lately, which should travel well.

Cheeses and a baguette are classic and easy. Slice the bread at home and put in a ziploc.

food for thought though: if your child is young enough for a stroller, he might be too young to stay up for fireworks (they are past my DC's bedtime) and/or be terrified of the loud noise.

We will probably end up taking snacks, but like the idea of a picnic. Falafel is a great idea! Our kid is 3. He rarely uses his stroller, and is totally able to stay up late.

How about curry puffs? Or really, any filling baked inside puff pastry. Just make sure they cool completely before packing them, so they stay crisp and flaky.

Bean salad. Rinse and drain a can of black beans, a can of kidney beans, and a can of white beans (or garbanzos, if you prefer). Dress them with some olive oil, salt, and pepper and some fresh diced veggies- tomatoes, cucumbers. You could throw in some fresh feta if you like. Simple, and the LO can easily eat it since everything is "grabbable."
