bottles, nipples for newborns

Anonymous
Hi, my friend gave us some great bottles, but I noticed they said "for six months and up".
Do the nipples come in different sizes, and if one is breast feeding primarily, how many do you need?
Also, do they generally give those to you in the hospital?
Thanks in advance for your response.

There are ones that are slower flow, which is better if you are breast feeding. If you plan to exclusively BF, they probably won't give you any in the hospital(most lactation people recommend not giving a bottle until at least 6 weeks, when BFing patterns are better established). I think you can talk to 20 people and they'll give you 20 different answers on which ones and how many. We used Medela and our DD loved them, but not every baby is the same. We had about 6 bottles to start with, but we didn't use them that much until she was about 4 months old. Good luck!

I have a 5 week old and she likes the Gerber Nuk orthodontic slow flow nipples, size 1 for newborns. There are different sizes, you are correct. We've tried all kinds and these are the only ones she's taken to. It took her awhile to get the hang of it - she had to learn how to stop and start the flow. My favorite bottles are the Medela ones that have very clear volume markings on the side. It's nice to easily see how much the baby has eaten, since I'm keeping track.

I am breastfeeding, pumping, and giving some formula. I have about 10 bottles and nipples, but I'm using them a lot. They're easy enough to hand wash, but it's pretty hard to find a free moment sometimes to do that. If you're exclusively breastfeeding, I'd start with 3 each. You can always get a few more if you need them.

I am also breastfeeding with some pumping and some formula. I like playtex drop-ins with the "natural latch" nipple in Slow for my 6 week old.

I've tried a number of nipples and this one doesn't cause him to change the way he latches on me like the others did.

The lactation consultant we saw also recommended the Nuk style orthodontic nipples. Of course that was after we'd bough a bunch of born free bottles that those nipples don't fit on... We also ended up buying the Medela bottles and like them a lot.
